Happiness

Happiness is something,
that everyone likes to feel
it’s makes your insides tingly,
and squirmy like an eel
Happiness can turn,
your day from black to white
and brighten up everything,
just like turning on a light
But to feel happiness,
you must first feel sad,
you must first feel bad,
you must first feel mad
Then all of the sudden it’ll strike you,
like a needle strikes a vein
you’ll feel like conquering the world
you’ll be higher than a plane
it’ll start out kind of slow
you’ll crack a little smile
then you’ll burst out laughin
people will hear you for a mile
I love getting this feeling
and I love feeling this way
and I feel like this in English class
every single day!!!

1984

To begin, chapter ten was a very surprising chapter to me. It never occured to me in the slightest bit that Mr. Charrington would do something to hurt Winston or Julia. Especially as an owner of a shop like his, I did not imagine him as a member of the thought police.

At the conclusion of book two I have an idea of what may happen next. I believe that being captured, Julia will confess after being tortured because we are even told that everyone confesses. She will give up the fact that she is in the brotherhood and give up the names of Martin, O'Brien, and Winston. Julia will then be vaporized and will cease to exist. I do not think that Winston is going to die this soon in the book. If he died now the book would just end. I believe that somehow the brotherhood is going to save him, and himself, along with O'Brien and Martin, will change their identities and continue their lives. I do think that Winston will die by the end of the book though and this may be either by the party or through suicide for the brotherhood.

Genetically Altering Children

With technology advancing at an alarming rate and new discoveries being made every day, it’s just a matter of time before parents will have the ability to genetically alter their kids. In some cases this could save kids from having disabilities or mental illnesses. However, it can also help kids to become far more superior than they should be either mentally or physically. While genetically altering kids could help fight illness, disease, and many of societies other problems, it is only a matter of time before it will be used to make seemingly perfect kids.

Personally I am not opposed to genetically altering kids. From what I see in my everyday life, there are many things that I would like to change if given the chance. I see kids with disabilities, mental illnesses, and many other problems. If given the opportunity, and to give these kids a more fulfilling and normal life, I would have no problem with genetically altering these kids. To give a kid in a wheelchair the ability to walk or to give a mentally retarded individual the ability to live alone in normal society would be great. These are some of the things that could be done through genetically altering children.

One drawback of this is the fact that these kids are not being healed of their imperfections, they’re being born without them. Genetically altering a child to walk from birth is much different than giving him the ability after he’s never had it before. Now I’m not saying that it shouldn’t be done because of these reasons, I’m simply saying that the children won’t appreciate the process as much after not going through the bad.
Another drawback and the most dangerous part of this whole process would have to be the fact that parents will try and genetically alter their kids to be seemingly perfect when there is nothing wrong with them to begin with. This is where I am opposed to genetically altering kids and where I draw the line. Giving kids the opportunity to live a normal life from birth is a lot different than giving kids the ability to get perfect test scores and go professional in any sport they choose. It is obvious that some individuals have genes that allow their offspring to do great things. We can clearly see this in the world of professional sports. Some examples are Payton and Eli Manning. These brothers both play professional football. Also we see this in parents and their kids, for example the professional basketball player Joe “Jelly Bean” Bryant and his son Kobe Bryant. Also it seems that most professional basketball players or track runners are African American. This isn’t just coincidence, this is the fact that genes play a big role in what people become. These are not things that should be messed with from birth. Parents should not be given the ability to make their children professional athletes or scholars because then this process will become nothing more than a competition to make the perfect child and nobody will have any incentive to work in life. A child who is handed everything will not have to work to get ahead in life because everything is given to him. A child who has nothing has to work to get ahead in life. If every child is born seemingly perfect there will be no incentive to do anything, technology and research will come to a standstill, professional sports will become a thing of the past because everyone will have the abilities to perform, and society will fall apart. The only way for society to work is with diversity.
Technology is at the point where the ability to genetically alter kids is not far from becoming a reality. Parents will soon be given the option of totally changing their children’s genes. I definitely agree in this if it is used for curing disease and illness, but not to make a “super child.” This is where I draw the line and where the line should be drawn for everyone else. Genetically altering children should be used for good, but not perfection.

I Believe that Having a Goal or Dream in Life can Change a Person

I believe that having a goal or a dream in life can change a person. Everybody lives their life a different way and sometimes this may be good while other times it may be bad. Some people make good decisions in all aspects of their lives or just get lucky and live a care free almost perfect life. Others, however, make bad decisions or just get unlucky and end up with problems. These are the people who have the choice to keep going down the dark road they are on or make a change for the better and turn their lives around. This can be quite a simple task if you want to change, and having something to look forward to or a little motivation from a goal in life can really help in achieving success.

My older brother went through a rough point in his life during his first few years in high school. He had anger issues and just behavioral issues in general. He was never a bad kid, but he was making poor decisions, like not doing his school work, mouthing off to teachers and authoritative figures, and being disrespectful to his parents. I witnessed this first hand, as his brother, and wondered what went wrong. He was my brother and I hated to see him like this, angry and always getting in trouble. He was my older bother who I was closest to and I loved him so it hurt. I was also worried that I might end up like this when I got to high school and I did not want this to happen.

I decided to talk to my brother and find out what was wrong. However, he would not talk or open up to me so it was like talking to a brick wall when I tried to help him out. This occurred all the way until his junior year and then we figured out what was wrong.

My brother learned about the Marine Corps from some kids in school. He took it upon himself to research and find out what it was all about and this is when everything changed. He decided that he wanted to join the Marines. At this point in time he made a lot of new friends that were also joining and it is where he met his best friend, Eric Dunn. They began hanging out a lot and we started to see a big change in his behavior. He needed to pick up his grades to join and he did so. He became nicer to his teachers and everyone at home. We later learned that all he really needed was some good friends and a goal in life to turn everything around.

Having a goal in life ends up being a great thing. After learning about the Marine Corps my brother turned his life completely around and became a normal kid. He stayed out of trouble, for the most part, and became the brother I really needed in my life. Sometimes all it takes is some friends and a dream to turn things around and I learned this through the life of my own brother. I truly believe now that people can change regardless of what has happened in their lives. All it takes is a dream.

How Exams Take Over Your Life

Exams take over your life. They control all aspects of your life including your personal, social and family life. How well you do, as well as, how poorly you do will greatly dictate how different people will view you. Also whether you do well, or poorly, you can never win in all aspects of your life because high school is a very cruel place. Teachers are the ones that make up these exams and they have all the power. They can control the lives of all their students with a single sheet of paper. How exams control a student’s life is something everybody should learn about.
To begin, exams are made up strictly to ruin your personal life and regardless of when you hear about them you can never be ready. The teacher will either tell you early about an exam or just a few days in advance and they almost seem to know which way you will hate the most. If they decide to tell you early, then you will be stuck worrying until the exam. Also, you will put off studying until the night before anyways and this particular night you will have 4 hours of homework to do for other classes. Teachers have a way of knowing weeks in advance about when the most homework will be given out and they give the exam the day all the work is due. Teachers may also tell you about your exam just a few days in advance. Although you will have less time to worry about it, you will get seriously stressed out because you will have loads of other schoolwork to do at the time and no time to study. I guarantee that teachers talk to each other and figure out the best times to give students exams so that their personal lives are ruined.
Now, your social live is another area that is affected greatly by the wonderful world of exams. Not only do you have less time to talk to your friends, but your grades may dictate how others look at you. Most people, by high school, know which students are super smart, which students do very poorly, and which students are average performers. No one seems to like a straight A student, and this is a sure fire way to get made fun of. On the other hand, if you totally bomb all of your exams, you will get made fun of for being stupid. I find that the best way to be liked by all your friends is to do average. Although a “C” is technically average, a “B” works perfectly fine as average in school. If you stick with this on your exams you are guaranteed to be fine with the kids around you. No one likes a perfect student, but no one likes a stupid student. Since grades on exams play such a huge role with how friends look at you, exams put a real damper on your social life.
Finally exams can ruin a student’s family life. Parents want their kids to be perfect students and in reality this cannot happen. Most parents will say “do your best and we will be proud of you,” but this really isn’t the truth. If your best is C’s and D’s they won’t truly be proud of you. The only way to really make your family happy with you is to do great on all of your exams and this is extremely hard. Also, you could try and study for a long time, but your parents would get mad because you wouldn’t be spending as much time with them. They want you to do well in school, but they also want you to spend time with them so no matter what you choose you can’t win. Exams in school play such a huge role in student’s lives that they ruin even their family life.
Exams play a role in students lives that is entirely too large. Not only do they affect their personal lives, but their social and family lives as well. The thing that makes this even worse though is you can never win with in all aspects of your life. This is because you need different grades to be successful with all aspects of your life. For example, to make students like you, you can’t do amazing on your exams because no one likes a genius. However, parents want their kids to be geniuses so if you’re doing poorly they won’t be as happy with you. And with your personal life everybody wants to get good grades so if you have to do worse on purpose for people to like you, you’re just going to hate yourself. There is no way to truly win on exams in all aspects of your life. However, which sections of your life you choose to satisfy is completely up to you. No matter what happens though, exams play a huge role in your life.
